First-ever Successful Video Call in Japan Using Low Earth Orbit Satellite and Smartphones

Rakuten Mobile is redefining the future of communication with satellites. In April 2025, Rakuten Mobile and AST SpaceMobile successfully conducted the first-ever broadband video call between everyday unmodified smartphones in Japan using a low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite. The satellite's antenna size is up to around 36 times larger than competitors', enabling Rakuten Mobile to offer internet communication that can support features like video streaming and social media apps.
At a press conference to announce this milestone, a live video call between Fukushima Prefecture and Tokyo was successfully broadcast, while the upcoming launch of "Rakuten SAIKYO Satellite Service" was also shared.
